Living in W.V.

At this time last year I had decided I was going to CU, and was really excited to get my housing assignment. The amount of time it took for me to get that letter felt twenty times longer than even my acceptance letter! :-)

I applied for housing at the very end of March, and got my assignment around the beginning of May. My choices were pretty typical of incoming students- the on campus "circle" around Farrand Field and a few Kittredge halls. I got really lucky and was assigned to a single in Baker Hall- Hooray for me, one of the first on my list!

Sadly, living in Baker didn't work out for me- I didn't realize how lonely it would be to be in a single during the first few weeks of school, when everyone around me was getting to know their roommates. I didn't get a real sense of community out of my floor in Baker and despite its proximity to all of my classes, I made the decision to move out to the ever-dreaded Williams Village (Stearns East to be exact).

This turned out to be one of the best decisions of my freshman year- not only do I have a wonderful roommate now, but a great floor of people who are all much friendlier than where I was living previously. Even though I had thought that living with someone else would be scary and too cramped, it has turned out to be a wonderful experience and tons of fun! Taking the bus from Williams Village isn't as terrible as it sounds either- at the end of the day you go somewhere that feels like home instead of still part of school. The community formed amongst the towers is great, and with your own rec center and dining hall you aren't missing out on much on campus.

Hey!
Its Ali again.
I got assigned into Williams Village, Stearns West and had some questions about it.
Are the rooms alot like the ones in your pictures? Is there a good amount of space for you and your roomate? Did you or your roomate get your bed lofted and would you recommend that? Also, I went to a college prep boarding school my freshman year of high school and put white christmas lights all around the top border of the room using like, bulliten board tacks, but I know at CU you arent supposed to make holes in the wall. Do you think I would be able to put tacks in or use a staple gun, by chance?

Thanks so much!
Also, I really like your blog! I love the insider stuff about CU as well as the pictures! Thanks!

Hey Ali! Most of the rooms in WV are very similar to my pictures- but what's cool is that in each tower each floor and room is a slightly different floor plan. For example in Stearns East where I lived, the top 4-5 floors were all apartments, and any rooms below 9 were generally 2 student rooms.
I had my bed lofted half the year and had it taken down at semester- with the amount of space we had (I was in a 2-student apartment, not a 2-student room) we really didn't need the beds lofted. I got tired of climbing up to my bed all the time, but I was also used to doing homework/generally hanging out sitting on my bed so it was an adjustment. Lofting definitely gives you more space but is sort of a pain- I'd try and convince your roommate to loft their bed :P It does make for some more interesting ways to organize your room and a pretty good amount of additional space.
You're not technically allowed to put holes in the walls- plus all the walls are made of brick so you can't really tack into anything right along the ceiling. One of my favorite things about WV though is that most of the walls are tack board, so you could hang lights on that! Or you can also buy little sticky back light hooks made for people's houses and hang your lights, which is what we did in my room. Purple lights are only $3 at during Halloween at target :)
I'm at home for the summer and hence not really posting, so if you have any questions go ahead and email me at heidi.obermeyer@colorado.edu. I love getting questions and talking about CU so hit me with whatever questions you can think of at that email address! :)
